Due to the planned use of the AI-25TLŠ engine in combat aircraft ("Š" for "ŠTURMOVIK"), modifications were made to the engine leading to an increase in its thrust (so-called combat thrust) and a reduction in the engine acceleration time to less than 6 seconds. The AI-25TL engine can be modified for the TLS version as part of an engine overhaul.
The main changes are to the fuel delivery control system, electrical system, high-pressure turbine, and inner duct nozzle.
The first flight of an L-39 aircraft with the AI-25TLS engine took place on 13.06.2002 as part of tests under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Ukraine.
