Rumunsko se z Tureckého vazalství stává knížectvím, královstvím, republikou lidu a nakonec republikou socialistickou. V roce 1947, po ostudném vyhnání mladého krále je na nátlak komunistických vůdců vyhlášena Rumunská lidová republika.
Při této příležitosti je v roce 1955 založena pamětní medaile, udělovaná především angažovaným soudruhům a inteligenci, která zradila svého krále.
