Members of 222nd Helicopter Squadron from Namesti nad Oslavou commemorate with a new camouflage the 60th anniversary of the prototype of the Mi-8/17 and 55 years of its service in the Czechoslovak and then in the Czech army. The first Mi-8 helicopters were taken over by representatives of the CSLA in Kazan in August-September 1967. However, the prototype helicopter flew a few years earlier - on 24 June 1961.
The company Paintskillers, which had extensive experience in repainting anniversary machines in the Czech Air Force, was approached to create the graphic design. The winning variant, which with its paintwork displays all the camouflages used during the many years of service of this helicopter. The camouflage was applied on the Mi-171Š helicopter of fuselage number 9868. According to the head of the special processes laboratory LOM Praha, s. p Jiří Vrba, painting the helicopter was very time-consuming. The camouflaged surface consists of a total of 12 shades and the different types of camouflage are separated by the so-called "peeling paint". When painting, it was necessary to change the masking of the painted parts of the fuselage frequently after the paint had dried sufficiently. The most painstaking part of the painting process was to create the illusion of peeling paint separating the different camouflages. Akzo Nobel polyurethane paint in NVG matte finish was used for the paintwork. The paint consumption was approximately 48 to 50 litres. Approximately 4 to 4.5 litres of paint from each shade.
The tail section of helicopter 9868 is coloured as it was at the beginning of service in the then Czechoslovakia. Following is the camouflage of the Mi-8 series helicopters after overhaul in Hungary. The centre section of the fuselage then bears the original Mi-17 type livery and finally the cockpit bears the current Mi-171Š series camouflage.
