Considerations for the development and production of a tank fighter, then referred to as a Sturmgeschütz (assault gun), on a medium tank platform Pz.Kpfw.IV with a lavetted 7.5cm Kanone L/70 fall into the period 9/1942. These plans were rejected and the Jagdpanzer IV L/48 type was introduced into production. However, at Hitler's conference of 25-27 January 1944, this request was reiterated and it was decided to field the aforementioned gun in the Jagdpanzer IV of the Vomag company, whose serial production was just getting underway.
Early in 4/1944, the 7.5cm PaK 42 L/70 gun was lafeted into a production Jagdpanzer IV L/48 Fgst.Nr.230162 fighter produced in 4/1944. Photographs of the prototype were presented to Adolf Hitler at the conference of 6/4/1944. He was very impressed with the long gun fighter and a decision was made to mass produce it, which was to increase to a total of 800 units per month. The long-term production plan (4/1944-4/1945) envisaged the delivery of up to 2020 Jagdpanzer IV tank fighters with both types of guns.
On 18/06/1944, the official name for this type of Panzer was determined by Hitler to be Panzer IV/70(V). The letter "V" in brackets denoted the manufacturing company Vomag.
Lafetation of the heavier anti-tank gun forced several modifications to the design. Both the inner and outer parts of the cannon's housing were modified to reduce weight while not reducing armour protection. The barrel of the gun was supported by a brace during transfers. After firing, the barrel was 'flushed' with air. Due to the longer cartridges in the cannon, the ammunition supply was reduced to 57 rounds.

Modifications: Already on the Jagdpanzer IV tank fighter with the L/48 gun, the front of the platform was overloaded. On 16.5.1944, the representatives proposed to move the running gear 100 forward to shift the centre of gravity of the machine, but this was not possible without extensive modification of the platform, and the proposal was therefore rejected. Another consideration was to reduce the thickness of the front armouring to 60mm and fit all-steel running wheels (the first four on each side). The reduction in armour thickness was not accepted, and the use of full-steel running wheels (first pair on each side) was approved. At the same time, weight-reduced tracks were to be used. Both of these changes were introduced in 9/1944. From the pair of spare running wheels originally carried on the engine cowling, one rubber-banded wheel was replaced by an all-steel wheel.

Type of change/modification/experiment
9/1944
Due to reports of zimmerite's antimagnetic layer igniting after anti-armor missile hits, zimmerite ceased to be applied at the factory. Following complaints from crews about rainwater leaking into the interior, small "eyelets" began to be welded on the nose, sides and rear of the superstructure ceiling to hold the canvas. This or the following month, the fitting of full-steel running wheels in the forward position was introduced.
10/1944 In an effort to save production time and reduce bearing consumption,
the number of support pulleys was reduced from four to three.
11/1944 The
The original cylindrical exhaust silencer was replaced with a pair of flame dampers. The equipment list of 15/11/1944 indicates that one third of the fighters were to be equipped with the SF 14 Z scissor observation periscope and rangefinder (Entfernungs-Messer 0.9m).
12/1944
Machines began to be delivered that had rainwater channels under the commander and charger hatches on the superstructure roof to drain rainwater. A new artillery sight deflector, which was composed of segmented parts, began to be fitted. The towing device mounted in the rear of the vehicle was modified for trouble-free towing by Bergepanzers using a tow bar.
2/1944 The
Most Panzer IV/70(V) fighters had the tension wheel introduced from Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.F. Only a few vehicles produced in 2-3/1945 received the modified tension wheel introduced in Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.H.
3/1945
Although a retrospective modification concerning the mounting of three mounts for the 2-ton crane (Behelfskran 2t) was ordered as early as 22/06/1944, the mounting of the mounts is only known from this period onwards. Even so, some machines were produced in 3/1945 without grips. Air inlets were no longer fitted to the brake covers. In their place, grips were welded on.
The Panzer IV/70(V) was the top design on the Pz.Kpfw.IV platform. The low profile, powerful gun and decent armour gave rise to one of the best tank fighters of the time. However, even this fighter was to have its evolutionary successor that would address the rationalization of industrial production. It was to be the Panzer IV Lang (E). Vomag was to cease production of the Panzer IV/70(V) in 3/1945 and switch to production of the Panzer IV Lang (E).

Panzer IV/70(V) v bulharskej armáde V rámci nahradenia strát bulharských obrnených jednotiek počas bojov proti nemeckým jednotkám na území Juhoslávie, Maďarska a Rakúska obdržala bulharská armáda počas záverečných bojov a po ukončení vojny celkovo štyri stíhače tankov Panzer IV/70(V). Išlo o ukoristené stíhače 3. ukrajinského frontu. Vozidlo nieslo v bulharskej armáde názov "Šturmovo orudie Maybach T-4".

Panzer IV L/70 (V) in the Romanian Army
This tank destroyer was included in the armament of the Romanian army after the end of World War II. A photograph of a machine from the 3rd Artillery Battery of the 1st Mechanized Brigade "Tudor Vladimirescu" from a parade on May 1, 1948 in Bucharest is well known. The machine (machines?) Served until the 50s, when they were replaced by Soviet technology.

Zaujímavosťou je obláčiková kamufláž, stroj má zameriavač s ochranným tubusom proti oslňovaniu slnkom a veliteľ má k dispozícii binokulárny ďalekohľad SF 14 Z.
