Following the approval of the winner of the competition for the new medium tank (VK 30.02(M)), contracts for the production of 1,000 Panther tanks were awarded to M.A.N., Daimler-Benz, M.N.H. and Henschel. Later the number was reduced to 850 tanks. The first three production tanks were delivered to the training unit at Grafenwöhr between 28 January 1943 - 30 January 1943. Here one serious shortcoming was revealed. When turning the turret, the closed hatches of the driver and radio operator were being hit. It was necessary to remove up to 3 cm of material from the lower corners of the turret. This was only one of the shortcomings of the immature design. On 21 February 1943, a demonstration of the new Panthers was shown to Grafenwöhr Reich Minister Albert Speer. A total of 13 tanks took part in the demonstration. All these tanks had the original clutch-brake steering system. Speer himself tried driving one of them and afterwards criticized the heavy steering. There were also problems with the turret area venting when firing. The ascent of the tanks up the steeper hill was without loss of any machine. Despite this, the Panzer-Abteilung 51 trainees had considerable reservations. These concerned problems with engines burning, fuel pumps collapsing, gearbox problems, timing gears breaking, oil viscosity problems, etc. During the demonstration itself, 6 of the 13 Panthers broke down, and even during the exercise the reliability situation on these tanks was no better. Due to the failure rate of the Kupplungslenkgetriebe (clutch-brake steering) a new steering system Einradienlenkgetriebe (steering gear with uniform radius ???) was very promtly developed. A total of 23 tanks were produced with the old steering system (16 M.A.N., 6 Daimler-Benz, 1 M.N.H.). Beginning 3/1943, a new steering system was introduced and the M.A.N. Panther H.H.[/url] (16 pcs), already produced, were modified to this new standard. I have no information on whether the remaining tanks were modified as well. Tanks with the old (original) steering system were designated Pz.Kpfw. V Ausf. D1, tanks with the new steering system were designated as Pz.Kpfw. V Ausf. D2. From 2/1943 a new basic camouflage paint was applied. The original Dunkelgrau RAL 7021 was replaced by Dunkelgelb RAL 7028. Field units were to apply the additional camouflage colours Olivegrün RAL 6003 and Rotbraun RAL 8017. All criticisms of the design flaws led to modification modifications (45 modifications in total). These were immediately put into production, the already produced tanks were to be retrofitted at the Demag factory in Falkensee. These machines underwent rebuilds in 3-4/1943. In 4/1943, Schürzen protective aprons began to be fitted], which were intended to protect the insufficiently heavily armoured hull sides from rounds fired from Soviet 14.5mm anti-tank rifles (PTRS-41 and PTRD-41), which under favourable circumstances were able to shoot through the hull sides (above the travelling wheels). This perceived deficiency led to the specification of a modified Panther II, where the side armouring was to be 60mm thick and would withstand the aforementioned anti-tank rifles. Starting with the 251st Pather produced (5/1943), a modified Maybach HL 230 P30 engine was fitted (instead of the Maybach HL 210 P30). Modifications were an increase in displacement and consequent power (650 vs. 700 hp), and a change of filters. The Maybach HL 210 was made of light alloy, the HL 230 of cast iron. The HL 230 was 350 kg heavier. The increased engine power improved the tank's maneuverability, but top speed was not affected. Despite the modification treatment at Falkensee, the tanks had shortcomings which were corrected directly at the training centres in Grafenwöhr and Erlangen. In 6/1943, smoke grenade launchers (Nebelwurfgerät) began to be mounted on the front of the sides of the turrets. At this time, modifications began to be made to the travelling wheels, which were assembled and joined from two basic parts connected by 16 bolts. Their number was increased to 24. In 7/1943, turrets without a communication hole located on the left side of the turret began to be produced. At this time, only one Bosch reflector began to be mounted on the left fender. Previously, reflectors were fitted on both fenders. At the end of 7/1943 the last modifications of the tank Pz.Kpfw.V Ausf.D were ordered. On 8/24/1943, modifications were ordered for the tanks already delivered, which lacked the standard modifications from previous requirements. In 9/1943 the application of an antimagnetic paste (zimmerit) on the tank surface was introduced to prevent magnetic charges from attaching. At this time a modification to the track links was introduced where six projections (chevrons) were cast on the link contact surface to improve traction. At the same time, anti-icing surface grabs were also introduced (mittelstollen).
Further modifications to the design were brought about by experience in combat deployment and at the request of the crews, or unauthorized modifications by the tank crews themselves. In 11/1943 a reduction of the maximum engine speed to 2500 rpm was ordered. In 6/1944 the retrofitting of three mounts on the turret was introduced to mount a 2-ton folding crane designed for tank maintenance. At the same time, a bracket for the rear turret hatch, etc., began to be welded on.
The Henschel company produced 30 more for the Bergepanther (Fgst.Nr.212131-212160) (these machines are not included in the number of Panther Ausf.D produced).

I na Panther existovali tzv. Mittelstollen. Boli to drapáky, ktoré v zime slúžili na zlepšenie priechodnosti po zľadovatelom povrchu.

Tank made by Henschel. Of interest is the attachment of the "C" hook, which is almost in a vertical position. The tanks were made in about 4-5/1943. Photographically documented tank with serial number Fgst.Nr. 212061 made at the turn of 5-6/1943 already had the attachment of a "C" hook of the standard design.
