Przemyśl, Verdun of the East. Symbol of the Austro-Hungarian battles in Galicia and the Carpathians. In August and September 1914 the seat of the Austro-Hungarian High Command. For half a year, from September 1914 to March 1915, he was alternately part of the defensive line on the San River and under siege by Russian troops. Repeated Austro-Hungarian attempts to liberate the fortress cost hundreds of thousands of lives on both sides, so that three months after its capitulation the front rolled over for the last time and the immediate hardships associated with it moved from Galicia and the Carpathians to the east, to Ukraine.
