A military coup in Burkina Faso led to the ouster of President Roch Christian Kaboré, the suspension of the constitution, the dissolution of the government and parliament, and the closure of the border. According to the rebels, the coup was carried out without violence and those to be detained are to be held in a safe place. The soldiers made a statement on behalf of the as yet unknown Patriotic Movement for Protection and Reconstruction (MPSR). The main reasons given for the coup were the deterioration of the security situation, particularly the lack of a fight against radical Islamists, and the president's general inability to respond to the country's current problems. The EU and the US have called for the immediate release of Kaboré and other detained officials. Some vehicles belonging to the President's fleet show signs of gunshot wounds. The security and political situation in the country has been tense for a long time.
