Polish aviator and cosmonaut General Mirosław Hermaszewski has died in a hospital in Warsaw at the age of 81. He died of complications from an operation he underwent that day.
He is the only Pole to have gone into space. He entered space as a cosmonaut-researcher in 1978 aboard the Soyuz 30 spacecraft, which joined the Salyut 6 station and Soyuz 29 in orbit. They then returned to Earth aboard Soyuz 30. The craft landed in Kazakhstan.
