The Investigative Commission has completed its work to determine the causes of the crash of the prototype military transport aircraft Ilyushin Il-112V (Ил-112В), which occurred in August 2021 in Primoskovskaya Kubinka, Russia. Although the causes are known, they will not be published officially, a source from the aviation production environment told the TASS news agency. Another source clarified to the agency that the conclusions of the investigative commission do not indicate a direct cause of the disaster, nor do they hold the manufacturers of engines and aircraft components directly responsible, nor do they blame the plane's crew for the accident.
The aforementioned catastrophe occurred on Tuesday, 17 August 2021, during a training flight ahead of the planned participation of the machine in the international army-technical forum "Army-2021". The crash of the aircraft was preceded by a fire in the right engine, which the crew tried to extinguish. However, the fire could not be extinguished because the manufacturer had designed the fire extinguishing system to extinguish the engines directly, but by that time the fire had already spread to the wing of the prototype. In response, the crew shut down the burning engine and steered the machine back towards Kubinka airfield, but after the aileron controls failed, the ailerons went into neutral and the pilots were no longer able to prevent the out-of-control machine from falling.
The entire crew perished in the accident - the first pilot, Hero of the Russian Federation Nikolai Kuimov, co-pilot Dmitry Komarov and flight engineer Nikolai Khludeyev. Posthumously, all three were awarded the Order of Valor.
For completeness, let us add that the Ilyushin Il-112V is a light transport aircraft designed for transporting troops, combat equipment, various types of armament and cargo. The machine is intended as a replacement for the Soviet-made An-26 and An-24 aircraft.
