Commemorative medal for the conquest of Grivická redoubt
В память взятия Гривицкого редута"

The medal was established as a commemorative decoration in 1907 by the King of Romania and was intended primarily for the soldiers attacking the "Grivic Redoubt" of the heavily defended Turkish fortress of Plevno in 1877.

The Grivická fortification was located southwest of Plevno on the road or approach to Sofia. Apart from Russian troops, Romanian soldiers were also actively involved in the attack on the fortress, and after five months of siege, they and the garrison commander, Turkish General Osman Pasha, saw the fortress surrender on 28 November 1877.

Medal description:

Obverse:
The busts of Tsar Alexander II and King Charles I of Romania are in the area of the medal. The inscription is spread at the edge:

"ALEXANDER II. RUSORUM IMPERATOR.
CAROLUS I. REX ROMANIA".

There is a small cross in front of the word Alexander II.

Revers:

The medal is decorated on both sides with fine mother-of-pearl.
The surface of the medal is reserved for the inscription (Russian, Romanian and Bulgarian).
In the upper part of the medal is the year 1877 under which is a small Tsarist double-headed crowned eagle. Below the eagle is an inscription in Cyrillic:

„ВЪ ПАМЯТЬ ВЗЯТИЯ ГРИВИЦЫ-И ОСВОБОЖДЕНИЯ БОЛГАРИИ“

Middle section:

"AMINTIREA LUAREI GRIVIZEI - SIA ELIBERAREI BULGARIEI"

The last inscription is in Cyrillic (Bulgarian):

ВЪ СПОМЕНЬ НА ПРЕВЗЕМАНЕТО - НА ГРИВИЦА и ОСВОБОЖДЕНИЕТО - НА БЬЛГАРИЯ“

At the bottom of the medal is the year 1907.

The medal was made in silver measuring 39mm ) and a smaller bronze medal measuring 29mm, which was intended to honour soldiers ( privates and non-commissioned officers) who were still alive at this time.

The medal is not well known and although it is not an official state decoration it can be considered rare. Mr. Meřička has acquired a bronze medal for his collection, which should be kept in his collection stored in the National Museum in Prague.

STUHA:
However, at the time this medal was "discovered" among phalierists, no one knew or knew what ribbon belonged to the decoration.
