Gen. Jesús María Guajardo Martínez

Born in Candela, Coahuila, 29 August 1892.

After the outbreak of the Revolution, he joined the revolutionary movement to overthrow President Díaz and after the 1913 coup d'état, he joined the Constitutorialist army and the forces of Gen. Pablo González Garza in order to defeat and overthrow dictator V. Huerta.

In 1919, the forces of Gen. González Garza were dispatched to pacify the areas controlled by E. Zapata, but to no avail. They were unable to overwhelm the enemy troops as well as even capture their leader due to the enormous support of the Zapatistas among the population.

However, Guajardo, then a colonel, along with Gen. Gonzalez-Garza, set up the ambush, with Guajardo tasked with attempting to infiltrate the Zapata and subsequently luring him into the ambush. This is what happened, and the leader of the Liberation Army of the South, Gen. Zapata, is lured to the Chinameca hacienda and is shot here on April 10, 1919.

Guajardo receives a reward of MXN 50,000 and the rank of general directly from President Carranza for this act.

After assuming the presidency by A. de la Huerta, on July 2, 1920, he declares a rebellion against him as well as against Carranza. During this period, he supports Gen. Obregon.

Shortly thereafter, in late 1920, he is captured in Monterrey, convicted, and executed by firing squad.
