The cross is struck from silver with a diameter of 43 mm. It was designed for warrant officers and lower officers of the navy. In October 1914 the name was changed from Conspicuous Service Cross the Distinguished Service Cross and authorised persons extended to all officers lower than Lieutenant Commander. In 1931 they were authorised persons extended to members of the merchant navy and in 1940 even to members of the army and the air force serving on ships. In 1916 were set up "bars" for repeated heroic actions.
During 1. world war ii was granted to the 1 983 these crosses, after 1945 less than 100. The figure is a ribbon with two "bars".
