The generally accepted date of the foundation of the order is 1687. Queen Anne it has revised 1703. Some sources, however, indicate as the year of establishment of the 787. The number of members of the order is limited to 16 Scots. Sometimes, however, the sovereigns granted to other members, mainly from the royal families and foreign. These cases are, however, exceptional, for the last 200 years it only received the Norwegian king Olaf (1962). After the death of the bearer of the insignia must return.
