The unit was activated 2. may 1977 on the base of the CFB Gander as a 103 Rescue Unit renaming of the local detachment 424. squadron. Up to the present, even after renaming it to 103 Search and Rescue Squadron 1. in march 1997, conducts search and rescue operations and covers the area of the northwest Atlantic.
