This non-governmental, i.e. federal medal was established in 1938, in accordance with the government decree of 22 October 1937 by the Czechoslovak Volunteer Community and was intended for all volunteers who were militarily engaged in military actions or battles in Silesia and Slovakia in 1918/1919.
This medal is found in several types in our collections:
- 1938 issue. Minted in a reddish shade of bronze, matt medal with the monogram O.P. ( cylindrical lug )
- The 1938 issue in a lighter shade of bronze, again with the O.P. monogram ( cylindrical lug )
- The 1938 issue, a fine mintage in silver with a cylindrical tab bearing the hallmark
- Issue of 1945/48 darker shade of bronze, narrow lug, medal without O.P. monogram.
- Issue of 1945/48 struck in white metal
After 1945 miniature medals of various types, sizes were produced. After 1945 a small five-pointed star was attached to some ribbons as a symbol of praise.
The 1938 medal was presented in a paper case with a small ribbon and a decree of decoration.

For a more detailed study we can recommend the article by Mr. Ondrej Holub: Contribution to the history of the creation of the commemorative badge for volunteers from 1918-1919, which was published in the magazine Drobná sculpture in the 2nd issue (June 1977).
