Řád „Za veřejné zdraví“ byl založen dne 18. února 1938 a byl rozdělen do tří stupňů nebo tříd. V roce 1954 byl řád modifikován jako ocenění zásluh o rozvoj zdravotnických služeb, veřejného zdraví, hygieny a zdravotní a preventivní ochrany dětí. Řád tak nahradil starší medaile z roku 1891 a 1912, které byli určeny k stejnému ocenění zasloužilých osob.
Řád byl zrušen dne 3. prosince 1963. Byl tedy v platnosti 25 roků a devět měsíců.
