On 15 July 1898 Crown Prince Danilo married Princess Jutta of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.Jutta was the daughter of Duke Adolf Friedrich of Mecklenburg. The princess embraced the Orthodox faith, taking the name Milica. On the occasion of this marriage, a commemorative medal with a diameter of 31mm was issued. It has a raised edge on both sides, with a horizontal lug at the top, following the pattern of Russian medals. In the centre of the wedding medal is a double portrait of Prince Danilo in Montenegrin national costume and Princess Milica. The medal bears the inscription. VJENČANE/NJEGOŠ STRELIC// CETINJE/1899/Below the inscription are two crowned shields on both sides, the first representing the Montenegrin national emblem, the second the Montenegrin national emblem. and the Mecklenburg-Strelitz coat of arms. The medal was intended for a really wide public and was struck in pewter. For the wedding guests, however, it was struck in silver. Even this pewter medal in fine condition is rare and is becoming an ornament in our collections. The silver medal is mentioned by V. Měřička and Prince Romannof. The medal shown here is struck in pewter.
