Czechoslovak guerrilla badge
The history of the Czechoslovak partisans
In the countries of occupied Europe (France, Poland, the USSR, Italy, Greece, etc.), resistance activities and the guerrilla movement were an unpleasant factor that the German army had to deal with. It did so with force and brutality on an military scale hitherto unseen. In occupied Czechoslovakia, a resistance movement took place at the beginning of the occupation in 1939 (Defense of the Nation), and this passive resistance turned into an open guerrilla struggle as early as 1943-44.
In April and May 1945, guerrilla units fought regularly with the German occupiers. Here, however, we will focus only on the commemorative badge of the CZECHOSLOVAK PARTYZAN.
Members of guerrilla units were awarded in 1945 MS. War Cross or Medal for Bravery. However, it was certainly necessary to establish a visible award, which could be worn on a uniform or civilian clothing. That is, a decoration that will have only a simple souvenir and memorial character.
This commemorative badge was established by Government Decree No. 621 of 9 August 1946. At the same time, Act No. 34/1946 Coll. of 14 February, it was specified and defined who is entitled to the award of the badge and who can be called a "PARTISAN". It was this definition of the term "guerrilla" that proved to be problematic, as the conditions for awarding the badge were strict and difficult to choose. A later consequence of this regulation was the establishment of badges of resistance and guerrilla groups, which we discuss and will discuss on the website www.valka.cz.
The badge, as an award, could also be awarded to foreign nationals. Badges received, for example, by French prisoners of war who took part in the Slovak National Uprising and fought in guerrilla units in Slovakia, the award is also demonstrable for "Soviet" guerrillas.
The decoration itself is in the form of a five-pointed star with a diameter of 50 mm. The badge is made of bronze and patinated in the color of old silver. On the obverse is a crouched typical figure, a guerrilla fighter with a submachine gun in his hand. The tips of the star are underlain by a linden wreath, and at the point where the barrel of the submachine gun points outside the star's surface, the tip is covered by a linden wreath. On the opposite side, instead of a linden wreath, the tip of the star is covered by a two-line description: ČS. - PARTISAN
The reverse side of this star is equipped with a screw and nut to attach to a uniform or civilian clothing. The decoration was worn without a ribbon and no small ribbon was set up.
In addition to this classic badge, we also know the badge, the so-called, half-sized with a diameter of 25 mm, or miniatures 26-27 mm, these small badges have a needle on the back to insert into the lapels of civilian clothing. The military uniform was ordered to wear the badge "In natura".
The Ministry of National Defense was entrusted with the awarding of the badge, registration and other requisites.
The author of this tasteful badge was the academic sculptor Josef Malejovský.
Note:
Neither the ribbon nor the small ribbon officially existed for this badge, but as Mr. Václav Měřička describes the wearers, if they did not wear the original badge on clothing or uniform, they used non-prescription and unauthorized ribbons measuring 27 mm. A bright red ribbon whose right edge (heraldically) is formed by two stripes in white-blue and the opposite edge, therefore, by a yellow side strip and a red edge strip. This modification was suffered in the fifties, when this badge was still in the public consciousness and was proudly worn. In a later period, after 1960, this adjustment was no longer suffered.

He will not imagine another type of Czechoslovak badge. guerrilla, which is perhaps allegedly a design copy from the author's workshop.
So far, neither I nor any of my colleagues have seen a similar badge. This design piece is in a private collection in Canada and the picture was provided by the Slovak falerist Ing. Alex Klabnik.
The badge, or more precisely this design is made of silver, more details are not available yet. In case anyone will be willing and able to provide a more detailed description, picture or details, thank you in advance.

Hello, Regarding the Czechoslovakia Partisan Decoration, I have just acquired a full size specimen, 50mm, unmarked, (see 2 scans) in solid fine silver along with a mini on a stick pin, the small version seems to be silver plated and maker marked "Mincovna Kremnica".
As this badge was issued in bronze, I wonder if anyone can explain this silver variation? Is it an early strike before the others were made, or perhaps a private purchase piece?
Is the silver variety scarce? Any comments on value? Any comments will be appreciated. Many thanks.
Sincerely, Frank Draskovic, Southern California Orders & Medals Society
