BLU-108/B
Submunitions against armored vehicles. Type SFW - Sensor Fuzed Weapon. That is, a sensor fuzed weapon. The container contains 4 charges known as SKEET, a braking parachute, a rocket motor and an altimeter. Immediately after dropping, the container opens its own braking parachute, which also stabilizes it longitudinally towards the ground. Upon detection of reaching a predetermined altitude as measured by the built-in altimeter, the parachute is deployed and the tangential and downward-facing thrusters are initiated, partially slowing the BLU-108 and simultaneously granting it a rotation of approximately 40 revolutions per second. The action of these forces will then release 4 warheads in four different directions. Once stabilized, each warhead will use its infrared (IR) sensor to search for a source of IR radiation on the ground, primarily the propulsion units of J tanks or other vehicles. Due to the rotation and some horizontal velocity granted by the aforementioned rocket motors, the sensors from the warheads of one BLU-108 cover (search) a 4-pointed star shaped area on the ground. (The warheads are moving away from the center<BR>-space of dispersion-on opposite sides.) If IR radiation sources are present in this space, an explosive is initiated which, by its explosion from the bottom of the warhead, forms a penetrating projectile with considerable velocity-up to more than 4800 m/s. The kinetic energy of the projectile is expected to penetrate up to 110 mm of armour. If the sensor does not detect any target within a pre-set time, the self-destruct device will destroy the warhead. Hence the secondary shrapnel effect against infantry or lightly protected targets.
Simply put: it's actually a tube with four pucks (like a hockey puck). The tube at a preset height fires a rocket motor, which gives it a spin, which throws the pucks, each to a different side. The puck is trying to find something warm underneath.
The armour is pierced only by the kinetic energy of the projectile, the projectile contains no explosive substance.
Use: 9 pcs (and 3 area-denial submunitions (?) ) in CBU-92/B
10 pcs in CBU-97/B
6 pcs in AGM-154B
