PLRS PL-4 was to represent a Chinese copy of a medium-range missile AIM-7B Sparrow. Development work began in the late 1960s, but in 1985 development was canceled. A missile with semi-active radar guidance and infrared guidance were under development at the same time. The considered carrier was to be a heavy fighter J-8B.
