24. Autonomous Group

Originally part of the 52nd Storm, it exchanged the defenses of the ports of Sardinia on the obsolete CR.32 for G.50 and a separate existence after moving to the Albanian capital Tirana in October 1940. It operated from various airports in Albania mainly against Greece and Yugoslavia. The unit remained on the battlefield until the entire Balkans came under Axis control.
After his return to Italy in June 1941, the unit joined the air defense of Puglia with the 354th and 355th Squadrigli located at Grottaglie, 361st Sq. in Lecce and 395. Sq. (moved from 154th Gruppo) near Brindisi. The following month, the 24th Gruppo moved to southern Sardinia, where the G.50 jeo operated from Alghero and Elmaso in support of S.79 and S.84 while patrolling torpedoes over the Mediterranean. Insufficient range G.50 solved the allocation of several CR.42 for long-range missions.
Even in early 1942, the mixture operated G.50 and CR.42 unit attacked formations of Allied aircraft. Often due to shortcomings in the early warning system of the intelligence service, alarm launches took place with enemy bombers overhead. In February, the unit destroyed nine Allied aircraft from three different raids, and the following month, the pilots participated in 28 alarm take-offs. Their most successful day was March 31, when they shot down three B-17s and damaged another fifteen. 24. Gruppo paid a high price for the achievements when written off no less than 18 fighters.
Finally rearmed to a mixture of MC.202, D.520 and MC.205V during May, the Gruppo remained in Sardinia until August 27, 1943 before being transferred back to Metato Airport.
