97. Gruppo Autonomo B.T.

Unit composed of 238. and 239. Squadriglia was formed in November 1940 to replace the 96th Gruppo, which had handed over some of its aircraft to it. These were mainly Ju 87Rs, with which the unit operated successfully against enemy shipping over Maltese waters. Protection was provided by the 23rd Gruppo's CR.42 Fiats.
In order to support the campaign against Greece, the 239th sq. was moved to Lecce and the 238th sq. to Grottaglie on 7 December. This unit later moved to Tirana. With ten aircraft it moved to Jesi, from where it operated against targets in Yugoslavia between 10 and 14 April. After the end of the fighting in the Balkans, the unit briefly patrolled over the Mediterranean and then was disbanded on 7 May, with the two squadrons becoming independent.
About this time, the commander of 239th sq. Guiseppe Cenni successfully tested the "frog" bombing, consisting of a very low recess dive followed by a horizontal flight, which gave the bomb the energy it needed to bounce into the water and hit the hull.

The unit was reconstituted as the fighter 97th Gruppo Autonomo CT on 15 March 1943.
