History: Development of a 100 mm double cannon Type 79 began in 1979, was completed in 1979. Type 79 is a fully automatic cannon allowing accurate and rapid fire against surface vessels, ground targets and also against air targets at a distance of more than 22 km. All cannon systems are hidden in an armored turret providing good protection for the operator.
Type 79A was first used on class Type 052 beginner 90 - those of the 20th century. Compared to the Type 79, the new type has lower weight, higher accuracy, shorter reaction time and improved automatic control.
Another improved variant of Type 79 was first tested in 2004. The tower has a shape that reduces the radar effective reflection area. In semi-automatic mode, the double cannon is guided by an electro-optical sight. In manual mode, aiming and charging is provided by the operator using an optical sight.
