Electrically powered, guided torpedo manufactured by Whitehead Moto (now Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquei SpA). It is designed for use from shipboard tube torpedo launchers and for launching from aircraft and helicopters. The first A244 type uses Selenia (Alenia) AG70 passive/active homing head, the upgraded A244S version uses Selenia CIACIO-30/CIACIO60 (30/60Hz sonar frequency) homing system. The latest A244S Mod 1 type uses the CIACIO-S (variable frequency) system developed for use in shallow waters of the Mediterranean region. The latest version so far is the A244S Mod 3. All previous versions of the A244S can be converted to this version using an add-on kit. The torpedo is a so-called lightweight for use against submarines in shallow waters, of conventional shape with electric propulsion. When used from an aircraft, it is lowered on a parachute, upon impact in water the parachute is de-energized and the retrieval system and propulsion are activated.
