AK-725, ZIF-72 - a 57 mm calibre fully automatic naval anti-aircraft gun, mounted in an all-metal sealed turret. The gun is based on the 57 mm S-60 antiaircraft gun. In addition to use in the USSR, the gun was exported to India. Its development was initiated by a decision of the VMF headquarters dated 30.11.1956. The development was entrusted to the design bureau CKB-7 (ЦКБ-7). The technical requirements for the weapon were defined in April 1958.
A prototype gun was produced during 1959 and by the end of 1960 factory trials took place, during which the prototype fired 3,040 shots. In subsequent military trials, a further 4384 shots were fired, with some components found to have low durability. Over the next two years, design interventions were made which enabled the machine gun to fire 750 rounds without failure.
The first vessel on which the new weapon system was installed was the Project 204 (No. 201). On-board trials of the weapon system were conducted 04.01. to 05.07.1963 in the Kerch area. On the basis of the test results, the AK-725 twin-cannon was accepted for armament in May-July 1964.

Apart from the fully-automatic mode of operation, another noticeable difference from its predecessors is the water-cooled barrel.
