Ch-90 Koala / Х-90 Коала [AS-19 Koala]

The Ch-90 Koala is an aircraft-launched hypersonic anti-ship cruise missile. According to some sources, it is sometimes referred to as the Ch-90 GELA (ГЭЛА - гиперзвуковй экспериментальный летательный аппарат - hyperzvukový experimentální létající aparát).

At the beginning of the 1990s, the project of a hypersonic flying apparatus (гиперзвуковой эксп was developed at MKB Raduga;ериментальный летательный аппарат - ГЭЛА). In NATO terminology, these machines are called hypersonic cruise missiles. This particular missile was designated AS-19 Koala (the AS-X-19 designation was used for its predecessor, the Meteorite cruise missile). The Ch-90 Koala cruise missile (KR) was developed for military use from the outset, with a range requirement of 3,000 km, and was intended to replace the KR Ch-55. The KR Ch-90 Koala can carry two individually-guided warheads (MaRVs) that are capable of destroying two different targets that can be up to 100 km apart. A Tu-160M aircraft is designated as the carrier. Development work was suspended in 1992 due to lack of funding, and resumed in 1999.

Visitors to the MAKS-95 exhibition were able to KR the Ch-90 on an outdoor stand at the MKB Raduga pavilion. The Ch-90 is about 12 m long and is fitted with a hypersonic impingement engine that uses petroleum-based fuel (aviation kerosene). The KR launch is carried out y aircraft, with a modernized Tu-160M aircraft (with an extended fuselage) as the basic carrier, which can accommodate 2 missiles. A suitably modified Tu-95 can be used as a second carrier.

After detachment from the carrier aircraft (launch), the KR is given a base speed by the solid rocket motor, this must be in the supersonic region, because only then can the hypersonic thruster start working. This is capable of giving the Ch-90 Koala a speed of M=4 to 5. The amount of fuel is such that it is sufficient for 3400 sec of hypersonic thruster work.
