ZAF - 155 mm střelivo Assegai

South African ammunition Assegai
I realized the progress in the field of artillery during the study of the "miraculous 155 mm ammunition" called Assegai. The article by my colleague Martin Smíšek mentions this ammunition and its range of 41 km.

I must point out that during the Panzerhaubitz 2000 tests for the Greek army, the Krauss-Maffei Wegmann armory invited the South African company Denel-Naschem to test the M2000 Assegai ammunition. On May 15, 2001, at a temperature of 21 ° C, measured at sea level and using six projectiles, a range of 41.8 km was reached.

This was followed by tests at the Waffen und Munition WTD91 in Meppen in northern Germany. During the tests, interchangeability with NATO ammunition and operability at ambient temperatures of -40 ° C, + 21 ° C and + 63 ° C were verified.

The development of artillery ammunition at the Denel-Naschem company has progressed so much that the range of the 150th Assegai M2005A1 V-LAP is 28 percent higher. An additional jet engine is used to increase range. The ammunition is designed for South African cannons G5 and G6 with a barrel length of 45 calibers and a barrel length of 52. During the tests of the G6/52 weapon, a range of 53.6 km was achieved.

Denel offers the following types of ammunition for the Assegai range:
M2000 HE and Practice (High Explosive) - shattering projectile
M2001 HEDP (High Explosive Dual Purpose) - fragmentation-explosive projectile
M2002 Smoke - smoke bullet
M2003 Illumination - lighting missile
M2004 Red Phosphorous - smoke-forming missile filled with phosphorus
M2005 HE V-LAP (High Explosive, Velocity-enhanced Long-range Artillery Projectile) - long-range missile with additional propulsion

Let me add a "footnote" here
While studying this question, I was slightly surprised that South Africans used the term assegai for extended-range ammunition - in the Zulu language: a short spear.

The original Zulu weapon was designed to be stabbed during a man-to-man fight. It was an Africanized variant of the old way of fighting. Two thousand years ago, the Roman legions fought similarly, using instead of a spear, a short stabbed sword - gladius.
