The regiment rose up in the building of its barracks against the Second Republic and held its position there from 20.7.1936 until 21.8.1936, when the building was occupied by the Republican order forces and the miners' paramilitary detachments.
The heroic resistance of the regiment that defended the barracks with shortage of food, water was finally broken on 21.8.1936.
This object was held only with the help of artillery of the cruiser Almirante Cervera.
The regiment subsequently moves to Oviedo, which it heroically defends throughout the siege by Republican forces until the front is broken by the Regulars, with whom it later participates in the fighting on the Teruel front.

Fr. Juan Martín Pérez committed suicide during the siege
Cpt. Nemesio Gómez Domínguez was killed during the bombardment
Lt. Enrique Yánez Abad was wounded in an assassination attempt on July 14, 1936, was taken from the hospital and imprisoned in Tudela Veguín and finally shot in Colunga.
Lt. Antonio Gallego Serrano was in the National Zone at the time of the siege, where he joined the troops and was killed in the ensuing fighting.
The following members of the regiment were captured by the Republicans:
Cpl. José Morilla Morales and Eloy Medina Peral (the latter was rescued by Nardona's troops after Gijón was retaken)

Cpt. of Health: Dr. Luis Clemente Ortega Gordejuela.
Col. Antonio Pinilla Barceló was decorated with the San Fernando Ribbon for the individual and the Regiment with the San Fernando Ribbon collectively upon the arrival of the National Army.
