Imamura Hitoshi
He was born in Sendai as the son of a judge. He graduated from the military academy in 1907 and the army war college in 1915. In 1917 he becomes a captain and the following year is military attaché in England. In 1927 he holds the same post in British India. After becoming a colonel, he holds various staff positions within the Operations Section of the General Staff. After the 28.01.1932 incident, he assumes command of the 57th Infantry Regiment in China and commands the Narashino Military School from 1932-1935. In March 1935, he becomes a major general and receives command of the 40th Infantry Brigade until March 1936 when he becomes deputy chief of staff of the Kuantung Army in Manchukuo. Upon his return to Japan in 1937, he commanded the Toyama Infantry School until 1938. In March 1938, he becomes a Lieutenant General and is given command of the 5th Division in China, which he commands during the early fighting of the Second Sino-Japanese War until 1940. From 1940-1941, he is Deputy Inspector General for Military Training and subsequently becomes commander of the 23rd Army.
War in the Pacific In November 1941, he is given command of the 16th Army and is put in charge of the invasion of the Dutch East Indies. As his transport vessel, the Ryujo-maru, was approaching Java, it was hit by a torpedo, during the Battle of Sunda Strait, presumably by a Japanese one, and was forced to swim to the coast. In late 1942, he assumed command of the 8th Area Army, based at Rabaul, under which the 17. Army, which is engaged in the Solomon Islands Campaign, and the 18th Army, which is fighting in the New Guinea Campaign. Imamura gets into frequent disputes with his superiors in the Southern Army Headquarters and the Imperial General Staff, for his soft attitude towards the local population. However, due to this, he gained partial support from the local population, which facilitated the occupation of the occupied territories and their administration. In 1945, he became a general and, together with Vice Admiral Jinichi Kusaka, in September 1945, he surrendered to Australian troops representing the Allied forces and signed the surrender of troops in New Guinea and the South Pacific Islands.
Post-war period Imamura is arrested in Rabaul by Australian forces as his troops are suspected of committing war crimes while he commanded them, including the execution of Allied prisoners of war. For these facts he is being put up for a military tribunal. In April 1946, Imamura wrote to the Australian commander at Rabaul to have his trial expedited so that in this way the real people responsible for the war crimes committed by his troops could be prosecuted. Imamura was blamed for negligently discharging his duties of control over his subordinates, who subsequently committed brutal acts and other grave crimes. He was tried and finally sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by an Australian Military Court at Rabaul on 1-16 May 1947. Imamura served his sentence in Manu Island Prison and after its closure in Sugamo, Tokyo and was released in 1954.
