Formed as a tactical fighter unit on October 1, 1939 at Ciampino South Airport (Rome), 51st Stormo, called the "Black Cats", spent the first months of the war defending Rome and Naples with a mixture of CR.32 and G.50. The first operational tour ended in September 1940 when the 21st Gruppo was transferred under the authority of the 52nd Storm.
In January 1942, the 51st Stormo was re-established under the command of the 20th Gruppo (MC.202) and 155. Group. Gruppo (G.50), 300th Squadriglia was at this time established and subordinated to the 51st Storm, this specialized unit of night fighters was armed with Caproni Vizzola F.5 and twelve CR.42.
The main task of the 51st Storm remained the protection of Rome and Naples and remained in central Italy until May 1942, when both Groups took over MC.202, then it was transferred to Sicily. Stormo subsequently lost many experienced pilots in operations over Malta, including the commander of the 151st Squadriglie named Furio Niclot Doglio.
155. Gruppo fought for four weeks in Tunis between November and December 1942 in response to the Allied landings in Algiers, the unit was stationed in El Alouina. After a quick return to Sicily, he was relocated back to Ciampino where he reunited with the 51st Storm.
The intensity of 51st Storm's operational deployment between May and December 1942 is evidenced by a record record of 1,100 combat flights, 109 aerial combat and claimed downed enemy aircraft exceeding 150. In May 1943, Stormo was stationed in Sardinia, where his groups flew MC. 202 and MC.205V missions to defend the island until August 1943.
After the armistice, the 51st Stormo was re-formed in Lecce and with the 20th, 21st and 155th Gruppo continued operational flying, but this time on the side of the Allies.
