8th Airborne Corps (1st forming)

8-й воздушно-десантный корпус - I. формирование

8th Airborne Corps was formed between September and October 1941 in Volga Military District in the town of Ekgeym (now Usatovo), Saratov Oblast. As its commander was appointed Colonel Vasily Andreyevich Glazkov, promoted in January 1942 to the first general rank of general-major. The numerical status of the airborne corps was 10,328 people.

By January 1942, the corps was gradually moved to the Moscow Military District and completed its combat training in the Podmoskovsky area. On December 30, 1941, sabotage occurred at the Losino-Ostrovskaya station during the transfer of parts of the corps by railway: echelon no. 47045, which was carrying members of the 18th Airborne Brigade, was blown up - a large number of soldiers of the 18th Brigade were killed. In the winter and spring of 1942, the corps did not take part in any combat operations and was mostly devoted to training.

After arriving in the Moscow Oblast, the paratroopers of the 17th and 19th Airborne Brigades were given combat training, jumps from airplanes and gliders, jumps within units from low heights (150-200 meters), practice of combat operations behind enemy lines. Military doctor 3rd degree I.M. Kaplin was killed while jumping from the plane on 10/05/1942. Later, several more soldiers died - their parachutes did not open. Two parachute riggers were found guilty, tried and shot in front of the boarded unit.

On 02 August 1942 - by order of the High Command - the corps was reformed as the 35th Guards Rifle Division. The airborne brigades subordinate to the corps were reorganized as follows: the 17th Airborne Brigade to the 100th Guards Rifle Regiment, the 18th Airborne Brigade to the 101st Airborne Brigade and 19th Airborne Brigade to 102nd Guards Rifle Regiment.
