The AN/BPS-11A is a conventional short-range radar. Its maximum range is up to 80 nm (about 143 km). Targets and their azimuths are displayed on the AN/SPA-4A azimuth and range indicator. The indicator displays a PPI, or map in polar coordinates, with the position of the submarine in the center of the screen.
