AN/APX-80 Combat Tree

AN/APX-80 Combat Tree

Radar system developed in the early 70s of the 20th century and at the end of 1971 installed on several aircraft F-4D (Block 29) and later also on aircraft F-4E (from the Block 56 series). The radar worked on the principle of active response and simulated interrogation signals of Soviet self-foreign recognition systems installed on Soviet aircraft supplied by the Allies (eg Vietnam). A false interrogation signal caused an active response from the enemy's aircraft, which was displayed on the radar indicator even though the target was out of range of the aircraft's radar, allowing pilots F-4D to quickly and relatively safely aim at the limit of the effective range of shooting radars and launch missiles AIM-7 Sparrow. The AN/APX-80 system (located in the cockpit) was controlled by the IFF of the AN/APX-76 system from Hazeltine (also used on other types of aircraft and helicopters - F-4, F-15, F-16, P-3C, EP- 3E, E-2C, S-3A, SH-3G, SH-60B) and IFF simulator AN/APX-81 and at the same time ensured the display of information on the indicators. The integration of IFF AN/APX-76 into the device also enabled the positive identification of its own aircraft.

The coding device AN/APX-81 was also used in a similar device installed on aircraft F-14, including those shipped to Iran. The Iranian system, designated AN/APX-81-M1E, had the ability to detect aircraft equipped with the Soviet IFF system, but had limitations that precluded its use to detect US aircraft. On aircraft F-14 US Navy was used variant of the coding device called AN/APX-82A with similar properties as the original AN/APX-80 system.

One of the F-4D aircraft (BuNo 65-0801) equipped with this device can be seen at Topeka - Forbes Field, in Kansas (USA).
