Background to the development of ranks....

Act (Decree-Law) No. 260/1940 Sl. z. was established in the Slovak Army a Corps of non-commissioned officers with the following ranks:

the chapbook
sergeant
ensign

This law was repealed in 1943 and replaced by Law 743/1943 Sl. z. (dated 27.05.1943), which regulated the rights and duties of enlisted men, including the conditions for marriage and all-round security.

On the same day, the House of Commons also approved a law amending certain provisions on the ranks of military and gendarmerie personnel. This law introduced into the legal system some of the ranks used in the Slovak army (and gendarmerie) which had no support in the laws in force until then (e.g. abolition of the rank of chief constable and its replacement by the rank of chief officer's deputy in the gendarmerie).

Newly introduced changes in the army:
- abolished ranks
second lieutenant
captain
staff captain,
brigadier general
divisional general
army general.

The rank of second lieutenant is abolished without replacementin place of the ranks of captain and staff captain, the rank of captain is created, and the abolished general ranks are replaced by the ranks of general of the second class and general of the first class.

This enacted the status the Army had been using since the 1940 reorganisation
Manpower:
- Rifleman
- lance-corporal
- corporal
NCOs:
- Platoon Sergeant
- sergeant
- ensign
Junior officers:
- Officer's Mate Aspirant
- lieutenant
- lieutenant
- centurion
Senior officers
- Major
- Lieutenant Colonel
- Colonel
Generals:
- General II Class
- General First Class

In addition to the above ranks, there were parallel ranks of sergeants retained for life (260/1940 Sl. z.).

For non-servicemen, three grades of sergeant-major were introduced:
sergeant
ensign
officer's deputy

Changes have also been made in the gendarmerie - off-duty gendarmes, where the ranks are recognised
- gendarme on probation
- sergeant-major
- chief constable
- officer's deputy
- chief officer's deputy
