The interesting thing about these types of vehicles was that they were not a military affair, but more or less private. It was backed by CAT (Compagnie Africaine de Transport), a transport company tasked with supplying remote French garrisons. From the very beginning of the French colonisation of Morocco, French supply convoys were the target of disgruntled Moroccan resistance fighters. The convoys were partly provided by the French army, but after the contracts were extended, the transport routes grew and the army was unable to provide sufficient protection. Several truck drivers were killed, so CAT decided to provide its own armoured vehicles to protect the convoys. CAT was using Saurer vehicles, so the choice of platforms was clear. The first known information and photographs date back to around 1929. The platforms used were to be Saurer 3 AD and Saurer 5 AD trucks in both original and modified form. The platforms were mounted on an armoured body made by riveting. On top of the body was mounted a figure-of-eight swivel turret with an 8 mm machine gun Hotchkiss mle 1914.
The composition of the crew is interesting, with the driver being a civilian employee of CAT, the rest of the crew being French Army soldiers (commander, gunner and observer). The vehicles received a numerical marking, which was located on the turret or on the bodywork. So far, numbers in the range 3-12 have been photographically documented. Mr Vauvillier mentions the creation of 20 vehicles. However, it is unknown to me whether by this number he meant the total number of such improvised vehicles and other types, or directly the vehicles of the construction shown in the attached photographs. Rather, given the numerical designations 13-17 for another vehicle, I assume that this is the total number of vehicles of this civilian effort to protect transport convoys.

Another modification was the use of discarded armoured bodies from French armoured cars White TBC. The bodies were mounted on the proven Saurer platform. Sources report at least five vehicles of this conversion. The cars had the same markings as the vehicles described in the first post. The known numbers are 13-17.
