Major-General Adolfas Ionovich URBSHAS

Adolfas Urbshas was born August 20, 1900, in the village of Kirdonys, parish of Pandelis, province of Kovno, Lithuania.

Before enlisting for military service, A. Urbshas studied from 1912 at the private Sakharov Gymnasium in Dvinsk, then during World War I and the occupation of the Kovno province. - In the 3rd Warsaw Gymnasium in Moscow and in the government gymnasium in Rezhitsa. In the spring of 1918, after returning to his homeland, he entered the 6th grade of the Lithuanian Gymnasium in Panevezys. In November 1920 A. Urbshas joined the military school in Kaunas, from this moment his service in the Lithuanian army began. In December 1921, he graduated from school, was promoted to second lieutenant and assigned to the 4th Infantry Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division, where he served as a platoon commander and regimental adjutant. From October 1924 to July 1925, he was educated in higher officer courses. In January 1926 he was transferred to the Military School at Kaunas, where he was promoted to the rank of captain and later major, serving as course commander and company commander of cadets. In July 1931 he was accepted as an attendant at the General Staff Academy in Kaunas, and on its completion in May 1934 he was appointed Chief of Operations of the 3rd Infantry Division. From August 1935 he was deputy commander of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. In September 1937 he was appointed Chief of Staff of the 3rd Infantry Division. In August 1940, he assumed command of the 7th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division.

In September 1940, after the incorporation of the Baltic republics into the USSR, A. Urbshas together with the regiment joined the Red Army. The regiment was renamed the 297th Rifle Regiment as part of the 184th Territorial Division. In May 1941, Colonel Urbshas was appointed Chief of Staff of the 179th Rifle Division 29th Rifle Corps, and in early June he was sent for retraining at the Red Army General Staff Academy. At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, he continued his studies at the academy. After its completion in December 1941, he was appointed senior lecturer of the "Vystrel" tactical courses. In February 1942 he was sent to form the 16th Rifle Division, upon arrival he was appointed commander of the 167th Rifle Regiment (Ministry of Defence order of 19 March 1942). The formation took place in Balakhna, Gorkovskaya oblast. In May 1942, Colonel Urbshas was again appointed senior instructor of the "Vystrel" tactical course (course for regimental commanders).

Since April 1943, he was acting chief of staff of the 16th. Rifle Division, which was part of the 48th Army Central Front and was in the second line of defence. At the Battle of Kursk, when the German troops went on the offensive, its troops fiercely defended the link between the 48th and 13th Armies (northeast of Ponyri), and did not allow the enemy to break through the main defensive line. The members of the division showed exceptional courage, indomitability, determination and bravery. During the first two days, up to 2,500 enemy soldiers and officers, 5 tanks, 6 vehicles, 5 guns, 16 machine guns, 12 enemy aircraft were destroyed. By order of the troops of the Central Front on 15 July 1943, Colonel Urbshas was awarded the Order of the Red Star for these battles. From 23 July 1943, the division, as part of the army, went on the offensive, crossing the Oka and Kroma rivers, fighting over 120 km and liberating about 60 towns. During the offensive battles its units destroyed more than 5 thousand soldiers and officers of the enemy, a large amount of military equipment and material. In August, the division was withdrawn to the Central Front Reserve, then to the STAVKs (for replenishment in the Tula area). At the end of September 1943, the division again went to the front and was subordinated to the 4th Shock Army. As part of the troops of the Kalinin (from 20 October 1943 - 1st Baltic) Front, it took part in the offensive operations at Duchovshchina-Demidovskoye, Smolensk, Nevelsk, and Gorodok. In October-December 1943, its units attacked the enemy grouping in the Gorodok area (the division fought from the front to the south in the Palkino-Lobok area, securing the flank of bypassing units and repelling counterattacks by three German divisions). From December 1943 to June 1944 it was on the defensive in the Gorodok area (north of Vitebsk), then took part in the Polotsk Offensive. For these battles, Colonel Urbšas was awarded the Order of Patriotic War (29 July 1944).

On 12. July, the division was withdrawn from combat and moved to the area of Siauliai to the 43rd Army 1st Baltic Front. Here in August, its troops fought heavy defensive battles, repelling counterattacks by Germans attempting to cut the road and rail line between Siauliai and Riga. By order of the front troops dated 7 September 1944, Colonel Urbshas was appointed commander of the same 16th Rifle Division (he was confirmed in the post by an order of the People's Commissariat of Defence dated 20 April 1945). In September-November 1944, its units took part in offensive operations in the Baltic, Riga and Memel as part of the 2nd Guards Army. By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated 31 October 1944, the division was awarded the Order of the Red Banner for exemplary performance of the tasks of the command in the battles breaking through the enemy defenses in the Siauliai area. The same order was awarded to the division commander Colonel Urbshas by order of the 1st Baltic Front dated 26 October 1944. Shortly thereafter, on 02.11.1944, Urbshas was promoted to the rank of major-general. In December 1944-January 1945, the division under his command within the 4th Shock Army took part in the defeat of the Kurland Group of the enemy, then participated in the capture of Memel (Klajpeda).

After the capture of Memel, major-general A. I. Urbshas was appointed commander of the garrison of the city. By an order dated 5 April 1945, the division was given the honorary title "Klaipeda". From February 1945 until the end of the war, its units, as part of the 6th Guards Army 2nd Baltic and then Leningrad Front, fought heavy defensive and offensive battles with the stubbornly defending enemy on the Livonian direction in the Kuronland. During the surrender of the Kurland grouping of the enemy (8 May 1945), he participated in the disarming of two infantry divisions of the Germans. After the end of the war, Major-General A. I. Urbshas was at the disposal of the Main Cadre Administration from June 1945, then in January 1946 he was transferred to teaching work in the "Vystrel" courses. He was acting senior lecturer of tactics and deputy head of the tactical cycle. From September 1955 he was the head of the military department of the Lithuanian Veterinary Academy (Kaunas). On 31 October 1961, he was transferred to the reserve.

Adolfas Urbshas died on 19 May 1973 in Kaunas at the age of 72.
