Sniper Vasily Zaitsev, an icon of the Great Patriotic War, is sometimes considered a mere product of Soviet propaganda. Like everyone who fought successfully in Stalingrad hell, Zaitsev deserves respect and admiration. It was the political leaders and propagandists who politically abused his name and the fighting mastery. Half-truths and complete fabrications about Vasily Zajcev began to live their own lives, and individual authors of historical and fiction publications take them over and copy them from each other. The crown for all this was put on by Annaud's film "The Enemy at the Gates". The name Vasily Zaitsev thus became synonymous with the term "Soviet sniper", although during World War II dozens of Soviet snipers operated with a larger number of successful hits.
