Major General Vladas Antonovich KARVYALIS
Vladas Antonovich Karvyalis (Lithuanian Vladas Karvelis) was born on 11 August 1902 in Šiauliai, Lithuania.
Before his service in the army of V. A. Karvyalis studied from 1912 at the male gymnasium in Šiauliai, and from September 1915 (after the evacuation) at the male gymnasium named after Ignatius in Voroshilov. From September 1918 again at the Lithuanian gymnasium in Šiauliai. During the Civil War in February 1919 he was conscripted as a freeman into the army of the Lithuanian Republic and in March he was enrolled as an undergraduate in the military school in Kaunas. After graduating in July 1919, he was promoted to lieutenant and appointed platoon commander in a separate battalion in Siauliai. From August he commanded a platoon in the 3rd Infantry Regiment at the front (near Panevezys, on the Dvina River). From January 1920, as a company commander of this regiment, he fought against the Polish army in the Vilna province, from December, as a company commander and assistant battalion commander, he took part in the battles in the Kosedary, Vilkomir and Ukmergen districts. From November 1923 to September 1924 he studied at the Higher Command Course in Kaunas, then returned to the 3rd Infantry Regiment as a company commander. From October 1927 he commanded a platoon and a company at the military school in Kaunase. From November 1927 to October 1929 he studied at the Military Academy in Prague, then served at the Lithuanian Army Headquarters as Chief of the 1st (Operations) Department and Head of this Department. From April 1934 he was an inspector at the Higher Command Course in Kaunas, then from May 1935 he was Deputy Commander and Deputy Commander of the 5th Infantry Regiment (Kaunas). From November 1935 he again served as an inspector at the Higher Command Course in Kaunas, and from December 1936 he became head of the course. From June 1938 he commanded the 1st Infantry Regiment (in Vilkomir, Ukmergė) and from January 1939 he was Chief of the Military Academy and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Lithuanian Army. In 1939 he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general. From June 1940 he commanded the 2nd Infantry Division in Kaunas.
After the annexation of Lithuania to the USSR in late August 1940, the 29th Rifle Corps was formed on the basis of the Lithuanian Army and the V. A. Karvyalis was appointed commander of the 184th Rifle Division, on 29 December 1940 he was awarded the rank of major-general. On 3.6.1941 he was enrolled as an attendant of the General Staff Academy of the Workers and Peasants Red Army. He completed the course on 3.12.1941 and was appointed as a lecturer at the Department of General Tactics of the Military Academy of the Red Army named by M. V. Frunze. On 10.3.1942 he was appointed deputy commander of the 16th Rifle Division, which was forming in Balakhna, Gorkovskaya oblast. In late 1942, at the suggestion of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Lithuania (Bolsheviks), he wrote an article in a Lithuanian-American newspaper with appeals "to fight against the original enemy of the Lithuanian people - the German occupiers", and made the same appeals on the radio when he came from the front to be summoned to Moscow. In early January 1943, the 16th Rifle Division was transferred to the Bryansk Front and assigned to the 48th Army. In February 1943 in the area of Alexejevka village (Pokrovsky district, Oryol oblast) it went on the offensive, but had no success. After suffering heavy casualties, it was withdrawn to the second line on 16 March 1943. On 17 April, Major-General Karvyalis took command of this division. In early July, German troops went on the offensive on the Oryol-Kursk and Belgorod directions. Parts of the division defended the link between the 48th and 13th Army and prevented it from breaking through the main defensive line. On 23 July, the division went on the offensive, forcibly crossing the Oka and Kroma rivers, fighting for 120 km (120 mi) and liberating about 60 settlements. In August, it was withdrawn to the reserve STAVKA. In late September, the division arrived at the Kalininsky Front as part of the 4th Shock Army and took part in the Smolensk, Dukhovshchinsko-Demidovskaya, Nevelsko-Gorodok offensive operations. In October-December, its units participated in the defeat of the enemy grouping in the Gorodok area. From late 1943 to June 1944 the division was on the defensive, then as part of the 4th Shock Army 1st Baltic Front it went on the offensive and participated in the Belorussian and Polotsk offensive operations. Its troops fought for up to 55 km, crossed the Driss River and liberated 43 settlements. On 12 July 1944, the division was withdrawn from the fighting and moved to the area of Siauliai, where it was incorporated into the 43rd Army. In August 1944, the division fought in the 51st and 2nd Guards Army formations. In early September 1944, V. A. Karvyalis was removed from the post of division commander by the decision of 2nd Guards Army commander lieutenant-general P. G. Chanchibadze and was placed at the disposal of the main cadre administration.
In November 1944, he was appointed deputy commander of the 118th Rifle Corps, which was in reserve STAVKA. He was temporarily serving as corps commander from 23 to 26 November 1944. In January 1945, the corps was assigned to the 21st Army of the 1st Ukrainian Front and took part in the Sandomierz-Silesia, Upper Silesia and Prague offensive operations. After the war, from 6 June 1945, when the corps was disbanded, V. A. Karvyalis was at the disposal of the Military Council of the 21st Army and, from September, of the Main Cadre Administration. In January 1946, he was appointed head of the military department of the State University of Vilnius. While serving in this capacity, he was approved at the academic rank of "Associate Professor at the Department of Military Education" by the decision of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Ministry of Higher Education of the USSR dated 14 June 1947. By decree of 20.7.1950 he was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour. As of 31.10.1961 he was transferred to the reserve.
Vladas Antonovich Karvyalis died on 28 March 1980 in Vilnius at the age of 78.
