Nickname 492nd Fighter Squadron: Madhatters (Mad Hatters). Mad Hatter is a character from the fairy tale book Alice in Wonderland and the same name is one of the first episodes of the animated series of Woody's Woodpecker Adventures.

The unit uses the original character 55 Bombardment Squadron (Dive) approved on 25 February 1943 and modified on 11 February 2005.

On May 13, 2009, about 250 members of the 48th Fighter Wing returned from four-month deployment in Afghanistan. Most of the deployed soldiers were members of the 492nd FS. Aircraft F-15E Strike Eagle flew in that time 7 500 hours, accompanied, among other things, about 220 convoys of Allied forces and gained a record 104.4 combat hours on the F-15 in a single day.
