Pluk vznikl rozdělením dosavadního Četnického pluku č. 4 pro Halič, Bukovinu a Krakovsko na Četnický pluk č. 4 pro Halič a Bukovinu a Četnický pluk č. 17 pro Halič.


Název pluku byl v roce 1859 upraven na Četnický pluk č. 4 pro Východní Halič a Bukovinu (Gendarmerie-Regiment Nr. 17 für Ost-Galizien und die Bukowina).


V roce 1860 byly oba pluky opět sloučeny do Četnického pluku č. 4 pro Halič a Bukovinu.
