V roce 1867 bylo dosavadní Ministerstvo války v rámci širších ústavních změn přejmenováno na Říšské ministerstvo války. Jednalo se o tzv. společné ministerstvo, které vykonávalo svou pravomoc ve všech součástech monarchie. Předlitavská i zalitavská část pak měly navíc vlastní ministerstvo zeměbrany.


V roce 1911 bylo Říšské ministerstvo války přejmenováno na Ministerstvo války.
