history
The unit is formed on 23 September 1917 at Spittlegate airfield (some sources put the formation as late as 30 September at Andover airfield) as a reconnaissance unit. After completing its training, it moved to Ireland in May 1918 to support the British troops stationed there until its disbandment on 8 October 1919.
Re-established on 1 June 1938 at Abingdon as a bomber squadron. After the outbreak of World War II it operated as a training and retraining unit of 5th RAF Group. In September 1940, it became an operational unit again, and until the end of the war conducted mostly night raids on targets in Germany and occupied Europe. With the end of the war it is converted to a transport and disbanded on 18 February 1946.
Last activated between 22 July 1959 and 24 May 1963 as a unit armed with Thor ballistic missiles at Bardney.
