Major-General Pyotr Vasilievich SOROKIN




He was born on 24.6.1896 in the town of Belev, Tula province. In the Russian tsarist army from January 1915 to December 1917. In the Red Guard from December 1917. In the Red Army from February 1918. Graduate of the training headquarters at the reserve battalion of the Leib Guard of the Pavlovsky Regiment in Petrograd (1915), the 2nd Kiev School of Warrant Officers (1915), 2 courses at the Faculty of Correspondence Studies of the Military Academy of the Red Army of M. V. Frunze (1934). Before serving in the army, P. V. Sorokin trained as a telegraph operator in Beleva in 1909-1910, then worked in a telegraph office in Tula. From 1912 he was a shift supervisor at Morse and Klopfer stations.

After the outbreak of the First World War in September 1914 he was drafted into the 25th Rifle Corps. In January 1915, he volunteered for military service and was assigned to a training group attached to the Reserve Battalion of the Pavlov Reinsurance Regiment in St. Petersburg. After his graduation in May with the rank of lieutenant, he was sent to study at the 2nd Kiev Battalion School. He graduated in September, was promoted to battalion sergeant and appointed junior officer of the reconnaissance group of the 56th Zhitomir Infantry Regiment of the 14th Infantry Division. He fought with it on the southwestern front. From February to April 1916 he was treated for his wounds in hospital, then sent as a junior officer to the 165th Reserve Infantry Regiment in Sarapula, Viatskaya Gubernia. In July he was again sent to the Southwest Front, where he fought as a squad leader of the 766th Infantry Regiment's infantry reconnaissance squad and attained the rank of lieutenant. In November 1917, after another wound, he was again treated in hospital. While on medical leave in December, he joined the Red Guard detachment at the Belev District Military Commissariat and was appointed an instructor there. In 1918 the detachment joined the Red Army. At the beginning of 1919, P. V. Sorokin was appointed chief of the school of the Tula Reserve Regiment, but after 10 days he returned to Belev, where he formed an independent ski detachment. In September he moved with the detachment to Moscow for further formation. In December the detachment was sent to the Western Front against the White Poles. As a member of the 11th St. Petersburg Rifle Division, he took part in the Dvinsko-Rezhetskaya operation, in the battles in the area of Sebezha, Polotsk, Lake Osvey, and in the Opochensky district of the Pskov province.

In the summer of 1920 he fell ill with typhoid fever and was hospitalized. After being cured in August, he was appointed to the Tula Territorial Regimental District as an instructor of the 9th Territorial Detachment of the company. From August 1921 he served as an instructor of all-military training of the Odoyevo Regional Military Commissariat. From September 1924 he served in the 250th Rifle Regiment of the 84th Rifle Division as a platoon commander of a reconnaissance company, deputy commander and company commander. From August 1925 to March 1926 he commanded a company in the 251st Rifle Regiment in Tula, then returned to the 250th Rifle Regiment and served there as company commander and deputy battalion commander. From December 1926 he served as instructor of the 1st Physical Training Class of the Division Headquarters. In October 1927, he was P. V. Sorokin was again transferred to the 250th Rifle Regiment, where he was deputy commander and battalion commander, deputy chief of staff of the regiment. From January 1931 he commanded a battalion and regimental school in the 243rd Rifle Regiment of Medinsky's 81st Rifle Division. In June 1932, he was appointed commander of the training battalion, which was incorporated into the 80th Rifle Regiment of the 27th Rifle Division. In May 1933, as battalion commander, he was transferred to the 163rd Rifle Regiment of the 55th Rifle Division, serving as deputy regimental commander from January 1935. In May he formed the 7th Independent Territorial Battalion in Kirov, later renamed the 12th Independent Mountain Rifle Battalion as part of the 2nd Independent Regiment. He was then transferred with the battalion to the vicinity of Leningrad and in January 1936 to Karelia. Here the 7th Mountain Rifle Regiment, renamed the 160th Rifle Regiment as part of the 54th Rifle Division, was stationed at its base. In January 1937, P. V. Sorokin was appointed commander of the 70th Rifle Regiment of the 24th Rifle Division in Vinnitsa. In December, the division was transferred to Leningrad. In May 1938, he was appointed commander of the 15th Rifle Division of the 6th Rifle Corps in Nikolayev. On 4 November 1939, he was promoted to the rank of brigade commander (combrig). In 1940 he participated with the division in the Bessarabia campaign. On 9 May 1940, he was transferred as chief of the Bujnak Infantry School. With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War he was in the same capacity.

In December 1941, Maj. Gen. Sorokin was appointed commander of the 91st Rifle Division. He formed it as part of the Zakaukaz Front in Makhachkala. After the formation was completed, she transferred to the 7th Reserve Army. At the end of April 1942, P. V. Sorokin was removed from command of the division and assigned to the reserve Main Cadre Administration. In June he was appointed chief of the Combat Training Department of the 7th Reserve Army, later reformed as the 62nd Army. In this capacity, he performed tasks to secure the crossing of troops to the Don River at Kalach during the retreat of the Southwestern Front units, participated in the destruction of the enemy breakthrough in the area of Ostrov and Volodinsky and its maintenance on this line. The tasks assigned to him were successfully accomplished.

From September 1942 to February 1943 he was in hospital, after which he was at the disposal of the Main Cadre Administration and the Military Council of the Western Front. In March 1943, he was Major-General P. V. Sorokin was appointed deputy commander of the 247th Rifle Division, which was in reserve of the 10th Army. From 9 August, the division took part in the Smolensk, Spassko-Demenskaya and Smolensk-Roslavl assault operations. For the liberation of the town of Roslavl, it was awarded the honorary title "Roslavlska". From 3 October it became part of the 49th Army and after the redislocation it took up defences on the Polzuchi, Tojgubino, Lenino line. On 9 November, Major General P. V. Sorokin was wounded (shaken) and lay in hospital. After recovering in December, he was appointed commander of the 3rd course of "Vystrel" courses. From December 7, 1944, he served as deputy commander of the 115th Rifle Corps, which, as part of the 59th Army 1st Ukrainian Front, took part in the Sandomierz and Lower Silesian Offensives. From 5 March 1945, Major General P. V. Sorokin was again treated in the hospital for illness, then he was at the disposal of the Main Cadre Administration. On October 30, 1945, he was released to the reserve.

Died on December 8, 1978 in Moscow.
