Colonel Nikolai Gavrilovich SUTURIN

Nikolai Gavrilovich Suturin was born 13.9.1907 in the village of Shchergoldzhin, Baikhorsk region of Verkhne-Udinsky uyezd (now Republic of Buryatia).

He joined the Red Army in October 1923. In October 1923, N. G. Suturin voluntarily joined the 24th Infantry School in Irkutsk. In 1924 this school was disbanded and he was transferred to the Vladivostok Infantry School. After graduating from it, he served from September 1926 as a platoon commander of the regimental school in the 143rd Infantry Regiment of the 48th Rifle Division in Kalinin. In May 1931 he was transferred to the Ryazan Infantry School. He served there for more than 7 years, holding the positions of course commander and company commander, and from February 1937 battalion commander. From October 1938 he was deputy inspector, from June 1939 inspector and from July 1939 deputy chief of the Control Group at the Military Council of the Moscow Military District. In August 1939, he was appointed commander of the 62nd Rifle Regiment of the 10th Rifle Division.

On the eve of the war on 21 June 1941, the commander of the 10th Rifle Division Colonel Romance ordered the troops to be put on combat alert and to take up defenses along the state border. The 62nd Rifle Regiment was tasked with defending Palanga and Kretinga and preventing the enemy from penetrating into Liepaja. The regimental headquarters was located in Kretinga. In the first hours of the Great Patriotic War, the 62nd Rifle Regiment, along with units of the 105th Frontier Detachment, entered the defensive fighting. Units of the German 291st Infantry Division were operating in front of the regiment's front: one infantry regiment with tanks was advancing towards Palanga, another infantry regiment towards Kretinga. By 6 a.m. on 22 June 1941, the enemy had managed to break through to Kretinga, threatening to encircle the 1st Battalion of the regiment defending Palanga. The enemy struck along the Baltic coast and from Kretinga to Darbenai. Enemy attacks from Kretinga to Plunge were repulsed by the forces of the 3rd Battalion and the 105th Border Troop. Under these conditions the 1st Battalion began to fight its way out of the encirclement in the direction of Liepaja. By the end of 22 June the battalion had been given the task of taking up defences along the east bank of the Minja River and delaying the enemy's further advance; the next day the rest of the division withdrew to this line. Even here, however, the enemy could not be stopped, after which the division was forced to withdraw beyond the West Avina River to the Riga area. During 29 June-1 July, the division's troops repulsed enemy attempts to cross the river and capture Riga, then withdrew to Pärnu under orders.

On 07 July 1941 Colonel N. E. Suturin formally assumed command of the 16th Rifle Division (however, he did not actually command the division until 29.07.1941), whose two regiments were then concentrated in the area of Rapla, Kohila (south of Tallinn). On 8 July, the enemy fought its way from Pärnu to the Marjama area. Subsequently, units of the 16th Rifle Division under the command of N. G. Suturin fought defensive battles to defend Tallinn. On 26 August, an order was received to evacuate the formations and units defending the city.

On 29 August 1941, during a voyage from Tallinn to Kronstadt on the ship "Kazakhstan", N. G. Suturin was killed.
