Major-General Pavel Ivanovich VOSKRESENSKY





Pavel Ivanovich Voskresensky was born on December 23, 1894 in Simbirsk, now Ulyanovsk.

In World War I, P. I. Voskresensky was called up for military service on April 28, 1915, after completing the entire course of the Simbirsk Rectory School, and sent to study at the Vilna Infantry School, after which he was accelerated on the 1st of April, 1915. On September 1615 he was promoted to battalion sergeant and sent with a marching company to the northern front in the area of Dvinsk, where he fought as a junior officer and company commander of the 68th Infantry Regiment of the 17th Infantry Division. From December 1916 he commanded a battalion in the 730th Infantry Regiment of the 183rd Infantry Division. His last rank in the old Tsarist army was staff captain. From December 1917 he commanded the 730th Infantry Regiment and was a member of the divisional committee. He was demobilized in early February 1918.

In the Civil War, P. I. Voskresensky volunteered to join the 1st Eastern Revolutionary Army in May 1918 and was appointed Chief of Operations of the Penza Group of Troops, which was reformed into the 1st Penza Infantry Division in July 1918 and the 20th Rifle Division in March 1919. From September 1918 he served as chief of staff of this division. He took part in battles with White Guard and Kolchak units in the Volga region, at Syzran, Belebe, Sterlitamak, Orenburg, Verkhneuralsk and north of Orsk. From February 1919 he was deputy commander of the 2nd Marine Petersburg Regiment on the Eastern Front, and from June he was commander of the 172nd Petersburg Regiment. In September 1919 the regiment was transferred to the Southern Front, where it joined the 16th Rifle Division and was renamed the 142nd Rifle Regiment. From February 1920, Voskresensky commanded the 3rd Brigade in the 16th Rifle Division, from June in the 1st Rifle Division, and from October in the 2nd Don Rifle Division. In their ranks, he took part in battles with the detachments of Generals A. I. Denikin and P. N. Wrangel, with armed formations of N. I. Makhno.

In the post-Civil War period, P. I. Voskresensky commanded a training regiment from September 1921, and from June 1922 the 64th Rifle Regiment of the 22nd Rifle Division of the North Caucasus Military District. From January 1923 he served as deputy commander of the 27th Rifle Regiment of the 9th Rifle Division. From October 1924 he served at the headquarters of the 22nd Rifle Division as senior deputy chief of operations and in September 1926 he was transferred to the Novocherkassk as deputy commander of the 221st Rifle Division. Rifle Regiment of the 74th Rifle Division. From September 1929 he commanded the 66th Rifle Regiment of the 22nd Rifle Division, and from February 1933 the 221st Rifle Regiment of the 74th Rifle Division. On 8 February 1938, he was arrested by the NKVD authorities on trumped-up charges of hostile activity and was investigated until 30 June 1940, then released for failure to prove guilt. After his release, he was on medical treatment from August 1940 to May 1941.

With the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Colonel Voskresensky was appointed commander of the 101st Airborne Division on 27 June 1941. Reserve Rifle Regiment of the 16th Reserve Rifle Brigade in Krasnodar. From August, he commanded the 26th Reserve Rifle Brigade, which tackled the task of preparing units to replenish the fighting army.

Due to the temporary abandonment of part of the Circle's territory by Soviet troops, all of the Circle's resources were stationed at Armavir from 18 October 1941 to 29 July 1942. In October 1942, the brigade's personnel were moved to the Siberian Military District in Bijsk. In July 1943, Colonel Voskresensky was sent to courses at the K. E. Voroshilov Higher Military Academy. After graduating from them in December, he was sent to the disposition of the Military Council of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. In January 1944, P. I. Voskresensky was appointed chief of the garrison of Kirovograd. In May-June 1944 he was again at the disposal of the Military Council of the 2nd Ukrainian Front, then he was appointed deputy commander of the 69th Guards Rifle Division. By July 1944 it was fighting near Orgeyev (Bessarabia), then in the first half of August 1944 it was transferred to the Yassa area and as part of the 52nd Army took part in the Yassa-Kishinev offensive. For exemplary performance of command tasks in the battles for the capture of the town of Jasy, the division was awarded the Order of the Red Banner on 15 September 1944. In September 1944, the division was redeployed to the Lutsk area, where it joined the 4th Guards Army, in November 1944 it was moved to Romania and from there marched to Mohács (Hungary). In December, as part of the 4th Guards Army of the 3rd Ukrainian Front, its units fought southeast of Balaton and advanced towards Budapest.

On 11 February 1945, Colonel Voskresensky was given command of the 21st Rifle Division. As part of the 26th Army, the division took part in the Budapest Offensive, the Balaton Defence and the Vienna Offensive. On April 19, 1945, he was promoted to the first general rank of major-general. On May 10, 1945, on the Enns River near Licena, its troops clashed with American troops, and the next day, during a ceremony with the U.S. Army at Licena, the division commander major-general Voskresensky was awarded the U.S. Order Legion of Merit. After the war, Major-General P. I. Voskresensky continued to command the 21st Rifle Division. In October 1945, the division was reformed into the 20th Mechanized Division. In May-September 1947, P. I. Voskresensky was at the disposal of the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, after which he was appointed head of the Sverdlovsk Infantry School (renamed the Tomsk Infantry School with its transfer to Tomsk in October 1949). On 2 January 1956 he was transferred to the reserve.

Died on 23 May 1972 in Novosibirsk at the age of 77.
