Major-General Vasily Fedotovich PAVLOV




Vasily Fedotovich Pavlov was born on December 30, 1895 in Log, Luzhsky District, St. Petersburg Gubernia, Russia.

In World War I, V. F. Pavlov was called up for military service by the military chief of the Luzhsky district and enlisted as a lance corporal in the Kexholm Body Guards Regiment. In August, he completed command training and was promoted to the rank of non-commissioned officer and appointed as an independent commander. From 12 December 1915 to October 1917, as a member of this regiment of the 3rd Guards Infantry Division, he took part in the fighting on the Northern, North-Western and South-Western fronts. In 1916 he was promoted to junior and senior non-commissioned officer, in 1917 he was promoted to the rank of feldwebel, and on 15 September 1917 to the rank of corporal. The provisional government of A. F. Kerensky arrested him on 5 July 1917 for speaking out against the war.

In September 1917, when the 2nd Guards Corps was withdrawn from the front and sent to Petrograd, it mutinied. In October 1917. V. F. Pavlov formed a detachment (up to 800 men) from the regiment's volunteers, which was then (after the October Revolution) reformed as the 1st Revolutionary Kexholm Regiment. From 26 October he served as chief of the revolutionary field committee. Within this regiment (detachment), as a commander of a hundred, he took part in the fighting against the troops of the Central Council of the Governor of Ukraine Lieutenant General P. P. Skoropadsky in the area of Vinnitsa and Kyiv. In February 1918, with the regiment, he made a breakthrough to Kiev, and together with a detachment of Muravyov participated in the capture of the city. He then served in the same regiment as chief of the regimental school, battalion commander and deputy regimental commander.

In April 1918, the regiment went to the front, where it fought against German troops as part of the Southern Section of the Hanging Troops. On 2 December 1918, the headquarters of the Southern Section of the Hanging Troops appointed him commander of the 1st Revolutionary Kexholm Regiment. In early January 1919 he joined the 12th Rifle Division and was renamed the 101st. Rifle Regiment. As of the end of the month, he was simultaneously serving as chief of the Chrenov Combat Area. In February-May 1919, the regiment under his command, as part of the division, operated on the Millerovo - Lichaya - Lugansk railway section. On 5 March 1919, in a battle with White Cossacks near Kamensk, V. F. Pavlov was wounded. In May-September 1919 the regiment fought in defensive battles on the Don River, then took part in the Voronezh-Castron and Donbass operations, in early 1920 as part of the strike group S. M. Budyonny fought against the White Cossacks. In April 1920, the regiment was transferred with the division to the Western Front and took part in the battles with the Poles in the area of Polotsk, Vilna, Grodno, Augustov, Graev, Tsechanov, Mlau, Soldau, Strasburg as part of the 15th and 4th Armies. He was wounded twice (in the leg at Jatsk on 4 June 1920 and in the arm at Strasburg in August). In October 1920 he went with the regiment to the Southern Front to fight against the troops of General P. N. Wrangel. After the end of the fighting in the Crimea, the regiment was again transferred to the Podolsk Governorate, where it fought against bandit groups and the Petlyurovtsy. In January 1921, he was appointed chairman of the Extraordinary Troika to fight banditry in the Olgopolsky district. On 17 February 1921 he was wounded during the liquidation of Zabolotnev's band. After the end of the Civil War, in March 1921, during the reorganization of the division, he was appointed commander of the 184th Independent Frontier Battalion, and in April went with it to Tiraspol to protect the Russian-Romanian border. In February 1922, he was appointed deputy commander of the 3rd Independent Railway Regiment of the VChK troops. A month later he moved to the disposition of the commander of the troops of the Ukrainian Military District, then he was assigned to the 24th Samara-Simburg Railway Rifle Division. In its ranks he held the positions of deputy commander of the 214th Rifle Regiment, deputy commander and deputy commander of the 215th Rifle Regiment. When the 72nd Brigade was reformed into the 72nd Rifle Regiment in July 1922, he was appointed commander of one of its battalions.

On 14 October he was appointed chairman of the Extraordinary Troika for the liquidation of banditry in the Podolia Governorate. In October 1922-March 1923, as part of the Extraordinary Troika detachment, he fought against Golchevsky's bands in the area of Letichevo, Litina, Mogilev-Podolsk. From March 1923 he served as deputy commander of the 70th Rifle Regiment, from November he commanded the 71st Rifle Regiment of the 24th Rifle Division. In June 1924, the regiment was renamed the 287th Rifle Regiment as part of the 96th Rifle Division. In December 1924, the V. F. Pavlov was transferred as a battalion commander to the 68th Akhtyr Rifle Regiment of the 23rd Rifle Division.

From October 25, 1926 to August 27, 1927 he was on the "Vystrel" course, then returned to the regiment to his original post. From December 1928 he served as second-in-command of the 240th Rifle Regiment. In July 1929 he returned to the 68th Achtyr Rifle Regiment as Deputy Regimental Field Commander, assuming command of the regiment in March 1931. From June 1937 he served as deputy commander and from 11 July 1937 as commander of the 23rd Rifle Division.

At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, the division, under the command of Major-General V. F. Pavlov joined the 11th Army of the Northwestern Front and took part in the border fighting in Lithuania. Its troops fought in bloody battles southwest of Kaunas and Vilnius. On 25 June 1941, while leading a counterattack near Ionava, Maj. Gen. F. Pavlov fell.
