The Mk-50 torpedo was developed as part of a US Navy project called ALWT (Advanced LightWeight Torpedo) to replace Mk-46 Mod 5 torpedoes. Initial development work got underway at Honeywell and Garrett in 1972. In 1987, the first operational trials began, and in June of that year a second supplier for these torpedoes was selected, which was Westinghouse Defense (now Northrop Grumman). It was introduced into the US Navy's arsenal in 1992. By 1996, a total of 1 063 examples had been built, all of which are in service with the US Navy.


Mk-50 torpedoes can be carried by surface ships, submarines, helicopters and aircraft.
