Unit arises 1. April 1918 at the French airport, Treizennes renaming the 3. squadron RNAS, which as a fighter acts on the Western front and in this role operates up to the conclusion of the truce. In march 1919 returning to Britain, where it is rámcována and 21. January of the following year is cancelled.
Already 1. march of the same year is again activated once again as a fighter on the base of the Leuchars, acting, inter alia, in Turkey during the Chanacké crisis (1922). Expires 1. April 1923, and on its basis arise 401. and 402 squadron (No. 401 Flight and 402 Flight).
The next chapter in its history is beginning to write 1. January, 1929, when it arises renaming 482. the squadron as a maritime reconnaissance unit at the base of the Mount Batten armed with the flying boats. Soon moving to Iraq, also operates in the area of the Persian gulf and the Red sea. In march 1940 it re-equipped with flying boats to bombers Blenheim, its tasks, however, remain the same. In April 1941, from Aden moves into Egypt and is operating over the eastern Mediterranean. In November 1943 he was transferred to India and operate in the area of the bay of Bengal and the Indian ocean. In the postwar period initially used as a transport in southeast Asia and after returning to Great Britain (1946) is returning to his original role of maritime reconnaissance units, and up to 1. September 1956, when it disbanded.
1. November 1958 is restored by renumbering the 240. squadron, again as a maritime reconnaissance unit and is used gradually in Northern Ireland, Malta and shortly also in Sicily until its dissolution 31. December 1977.
Yet the last time is activated 16. October 1996 on the base of the St Mawgan as a backup and training unit, responsible for training the crews of helicopters Sea King, intended for search and rescue (SAR) and in this role acts to the present.
