The 10.5-cm-Feldhaubitze 98/09, a modernized version of the 10.5-cm-Feldhaubitze 98, produced from the late 19th century, was the main German field howitzer at the beginning of World War I.

In 1902, under the direction of the Artillery Test Commission, attempts were initiated to redesign the 10.5-cm-Feldhaubitze 98 into a modern silenced weapon. In the end, only the barrel could be retained, the receiver had to be redesigned as well as the slide mechanism and the protective shield. The weight of the weapon was increased by about 200 kg.

The rearmament of artillery regiments to the 10.5-cm-FH 98/09 began in 1910, until 1912 with guns converted from the 10.5-cm-FH 98. At the beginning of the Great War, the German artillery had 1,230 FH 98/09 in its armament. One of the four detachments of each artillery regiment had three batteries with six light howitzers. Production continued until 1916. when they began to be replaced by the new 10.5-cm-leichte Feldhaubitze 16. In November 1918, the German artillery still had 1,144 pieces of 10.5-cm-FH 98/09 in its arsenal.

The weapon used split ammunition - Feldhaubitz grenade 98, an 18.8 kg fragmentation round, and Feldhaubitz schrapnel 98, a 12.8 kg shrapnel round, and 7 types of cartridges with explosive composition (an 8th cartridge was introduced at the end of the war in an attempt to increase the range).
In 1915, chemical grenades were introduced into the armament:
- green crosses marked grenades containing phosgene, diphosgene and chorpicrin
- yellow crosses for grenades containing yperite (mustard gas)
- blue crosses for grenades containing tear gas
