Major-General Nikolai Nikanorovich BELOV




He was born on December 3, 1896 in the city of Kursk. He was in the Russian tsarist army from May 1915 to December 1917 as a senior non-commissioned officer. In the Red Guard from February 1918. In the Red Army from May 1918. Graduate of the political courses at the political department of the 15th Rifle Division in Rostov-on-Don (1920), the Cavalry Advanced Training Course for command staff in Novocherkassk (1928).

After the outbreak of World War I, N. N. Belov was called up for military service in May 1915 and assigned to the reserve artillery brigade in Chelyabinsk. After 1.5 months he deserted. In October 1915 he was arrested and returned to his unit. From May to December 1917 he fought on the Northwest Front in a battery of the 2nd Caucasian Rifle Division. In September 1917 he was promoted to senior non-commissioned officer for bravery. After returning from the front, he was a member of a Red Guard partisan detachment in Kharkov (the Red-Kosak Hundred) from February to May 1918. He took part in the battles with German troops near Poltava and Kharkov. On 22 May 1918. N. N. Belov at the Prokhorovka station of the Kursk railway voluntarily joined the Red Army and was assigned to the 3rd mixed artillery detachment of the 5th independent Kursk Rifle Regiment. In October, the division was renamed the 3rd Light Artillery Division of the 1st. Inz Rifle Regiment, fought against the Germans on the Kursk Railway, and later took part in the fighting with the Czechoslovak Legionnaires. In the winter of 1918-1919, the division took part in fighting on the southern front against the troops of General P. N. Krasnov and A. I. Denikina. From November 1919 N. N. Belov served as chief of reconnaissance of the artillery division. In January-February 1920, he took political courses at the political department of the 15th Rifle Division (former 1st Inzen Rifle Division) in Rostov-on-Don, after which he was appointed instructor of the division's political department. He participated in the Voronezh-Kastorno, Donbas, Rostov-Novo Cherkasy, Don-Manicha, Tikhoretsk and Kuban-Novo-Russian operations. From April 1920 he was commissar of the 15th Cavalry Regiment. He was wounded near the village of Krymskaya, and after recovering in May of the same year he was appointed political officer of a battery of the 1st Light Artillery Division. At this time the division was transferred to the South-Western Front to fight against the troops of General P. N. Wrangel and fought in the areas of Nizhnaya Serogozia, Orechov and in the Kachovskiy Foreland.

In the autumn of 1920, N. N. Belov was appointed military commander of the 1st Light Artillery Division. In this capacity he took part in the fighting with Wrangel's troops in northern Tavria, in the Perekopsko-Chongar operation. On 13 November 1920, the division was awarded the honorary title of Sivashsky for its combat merits. After the defeat of Wrangel's troops in the Crimea was completed, he took part with the division in the battles against the armed formations of N. I. Makhno in the Crimea, in Odessa and Kherson gubernias. After the end of the civil war N. N. Belov continued to serve in the 15th Rifle Divisionas military commander of the artillery training school, from January 1924 military commander of an independent cavalry detachment. In May 1925 he was appointed military commander of the 16th Cavalry Regiment of the 3rd Bessarabian Cavalry Division. From October 1927 to August 1928 he was in the cavalry improvement courses of the higher command staff in Novocherkassk, after their completion he was sent to the 15th Cavalry Regiment of the 2nd Brigade of Nezavisimaya Zeman of the same division, where he served for more than 8 years, holding the positions of squadron commander and regimental commander.

After the introduction of military ranks in the Red Army, he was 24.12.1935 promoted to the rank of colonel. In January 1937, he was colonel N. N. Belov was appointed commander and commissar of the 5th Motorized Regiment of the 2nd Cavalry Division, and from November he was appointed acting chief of military and economic supply of the 1st Cavalry Corps. In the same year he was expelled from the All-Union Communist Bolshevik Party for rude behaviour towards subordinates and anti-Soviet jokes, but was readmitted by the party committee in 1938. From May 1938 he was allowed to serve as deputy commander of the 9th Cavalry Division of the 4th Cavalry Corps, and from 14 August 1939 he assumed command of this division. He participated with it in the Red Army campaign in western Ukraine. From January 1941 he was major-general N. N. Belov was commander of the 25th Rifle Division and from 11 March 1941 commander of the 15th Motorized Division falling under the 2. Mechanized Corps.

At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, on 06.08.1941 the division was renamed 15th Rifle Division and Belov remained its commander. The division fought heavy defensive battles in Bessarabia during the border fighting, then withdrew in the direction of Rybnitsa - Uman by order of the corps commander. On 4 August 1941, Maj. Gen. N. Belov was wounded, but he refused to board the plane sent for him because he did not want to leave his soldiers surrounded. Five days later, he was killed by shrapnel from a German shell in combat near the village of Pidvysoke in Ukraine.
